Where to stay near Zell am See: how to choose

The right answer to where to stay depends on what your days will look like. All five places are in western Austria, but they suit different holidays. Here is how we explain the choice to guests.
Zell am See or Kaprun?
This is the question we hear most. Choose Zell am See if you want the lake, the old town with its cafés and shops, and the Schmittenhöhe cable car from town. Choose Kaprun if your holiday is built around the mountains: the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, the Maiskogel and the high-mountain reservoirs. The two are only about 15 minutes apart, so whichever you pick, the other is an easy day out.
For a quieter stay
Mittersill, about 30 minutes west, is a small market town at the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park, close to the Krimml Waterfalls. Maria Alm, about 25 minutes north-east, is a traditional village in the Hochkönig region. Both suit guests who want calm evenings and less traffic, while staying within reach of Zell am See.
Seefeld: a separate trip
Seefeld in Tirol is not in the Zell am See region. It sits on a plateau about 30 minutes from Innsbruck and around two and a half hours from Zell am See by car. It is a good choice on its own, or as a second stop on a longer Austria holiday.
