Maria Alm is a traditional SalzburgerLand village rather than a busy resort. The village sits at the foot of the Steinernes Meer limestone massif, in the Hochkönig region, with farmhouses, meadows and the tall spire of its pilgrimage church at the centre.
Getting there
Zell am See is about 25 minutes by car and Saalfelden, the nearest town with a mainline railway station, about 10 minutes. Salzburg and its airport are a little over an hour away. A car is useful here, although local buses connect Maria Alm with Saalfelden.
When to come
In winter the Hochkönig ski area is close to the village, with slopes that suit families and improving skiers. In summer the region is known for hiking, from easy valley walks to longer mountain routes, and for mountain huts and lakes within a short drive. Zell am See and Lake Zell make an easy day out in either season.
